Repaint A Wooden Shelf

Tired of your old shelves being the same color in every room and need a change of pace? Repaint your wooden shelves to match the ambiance to each and every room in your house. A new paint job will bring out the lively spirit of your kitchen, the seriousness of your home office or the relaxation of your bedroom sanctuary. With many colors to choose from, you can have each room represent something different and each will stand out in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Thoroughly clean the shelf with warm water and a cleaning product of your choosing. Dry the shelf.

2. Rub the fine grit sandpaper to sand down the original paint until you have a smooth finish. Use the tack cloth to remove dust from the sanding so that the paint will be able to stick to the entire surface of the wood.

3. Cut and lay a drop cloth in your work area that will catch any spilled paint.

4. Start painting from the corners and use a small brush to paint the edges and small indents and sides. You can use the rollers to paint the flat surfaces; the rollers will give an even coat.

5. Decide if the shelf needs a second coat of paint, read the directions on how long to wait before applying it to ensure a maximum color consistency. Apply the second coat of paint the same way as you did the first.

6. Add a layer of clear gloss to protect your shelf's paint job. The protectant will provide a barrier between your shelf and anything that spills on it including water, candle wax or food.
