Tips For People With No Closets

A lack of closets requires some inventive storage options.

Closets can be taken for granted until the option to use them no longer exists. For people living in older homes or older apartment buildings, closets may not be present. This lack of storage space makes storing clothing, shoes, coats and other household items difficult. Despite this lack of space, there are several ways to make your available space work for you. Does this Spark an idea?

Rolling Racks

Like a closet on wheels, rolling racks supply space to hang and organize clothing. Rolling racks may work best to hang clothing that is used most frequently, such as jeans, a favorite jacket or shirts. Some clothing racks also offer space near the floor for shoe storage. If you feel the rolling racks may be an eyesore, incorporate them in your d cor by creating a backstage runway look within the room.

Armoires and Wardrobes

Back before closets were commonplace, armoires and wardrobes were used. Bring back this tradition by investing in one large enough for your clothing. If one armoire isn't large enough, consider adding a shorter dresser as part of a set. Many modern furniture stores offer armoires in a range of sizes, styles and prices. Peruse antique and thrift stores for armoires that will give your home a vintage feel, making the most of a room without a closet.

Shelves and Boxes

With no closets, you may have additional wall space. Make use of this space by installing shelving to hold items like shoes, bathroom accessories or other items. You also can mount rails to the wall to use as hanger racks. Storage boxes and cubes give even more storage space options. These have the added bonus of being easily stacked and arranged as needed.

Storage Accessories

Over-the-door storage options also help alleviate the lack of closet space. Invest in over-the door-clothes products that also save space, like those seen on TV. Over-the-door storage products also can store items like shoes and bathroom goods. For further space saving, try vacuum-sealing items that can store items long-term, such as out-of-season clothing. These bags compress large amounts of clothing, bedding or other fabrics into small, flat squares.
