Get Clothes for Free
Free clothing is available in many communities, if you know where to look. Social service agencies, religious organizations and charities often provide clothing to needy families. Free clothing can be found in a variety of ways if an individual is willing to ask for assistance.
Instructions
1. Notify family and friends you are open to hand-me-downs. Most individuals are happy to give once they realize a need exists. Most people would also appreciate being able to give used clothes to someone they know, rather then a faceless charity.
2. Post an ad in the "wanted" section of "Craigslist" in your city. State you want free clothes and indicate the sizes needed. Check the "Free" section of "Craiglist" to check for posts offering free clothes. Check for responses often and update your ad frequently.
3. Search for garage sales at the end of the day. Clothing rarely sells at garage sales and the seller may be willing to give away unsold merchandise. If the seller is unwilling to give the clothing away, offer a small amount to take all the unsold clothes they have off their hands.
4. Contact religious organizations and social services and ask for referrals for free clothing. Search the Internet for organizations offering free clothing in your city. Most free clothing programs are locally based, so limit your search to your immediate area. Verification of need may be required for some programs.
5. Check your local phone book or the organizations' website for chapters of the Women's Alliance and Dress for Success, non-profit organizations dedicated to assisting women. Both organizations provide professional clothing to women in need.
6. Find out if your community has chapters of The Princess Project or the Glass Slipper Project, which provide prom dresses for girls who would otherwise be unable to attend their high school prom.
7. Investigate the numerous websites that offer free clothing. Most require some form of "participation", meaning a purchase, from one of the sites sponsors. These sites work for some people and they may work for you.
