Measure A Closet Door

An important asset to any home is a lot of big, deep closets. Whether they are used to store cloths, toys or seasonal decorations, or even made into a mini-home office, closets add an invaluable organizational capability to a room. Many closets have sliding doors that allow for wide openings and take up a minimum amount of space when you open them. If you plan to buy new closet doors, it is important to measure correctly to get a tight fit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width of the door with a metal tape measure. Always use metal because cloth models can stretch, and just a fraction of an inch can throw off a door's alignment. Measure across the top and bottom of the door frame. If they are not equal, you may need to build out the door frame slightly or buy strapping to cover the gaps.

2. Determine the height of the door. As with the horizontal measurements, be sure to check both sides. If the lengths differ, use the smaller measurement to ensure the door will fit.

3. Check the width of the wall into which the closet door will be installed. This measurement will be important if you choose a thicker, custom-styled door.

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 and compare the two sets of measurements. The carpenter's rule applies: Cut once, measure twice. If the width or height is not the same, measure again until you get consistent results.
