Closet Space

A DIY closet made from a bookcase with shelves can also serve as an open dresser.

A home without a bedroom closet is no problem if you have an afternoon, a few simple tools and a freestanding bookshelf to reposition. You can create a custom closet to suit your space or your boutique-size wardrobe and enhance your d cor at the same time. In fact, if the house or apartment is lacking closets anywhere, this solution works for more than just bedrooms. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Pick a corner and adjacent bare wall for the closet. Place a bookcase, at least 30 inches wide and 72 inches tall, sideways against the wall. The open shelves face away from the area that will become the closet. The solid back of the bookcase forms one side wall of the closet.

2. Measure the distance from the back of the bookcase to the opposite wall to double-check the length for the wood dowel you will use as the hanging bar; subtract for the width of the wall braces that will hold the dowel. If you need to adjust the length of the closet so everything fits, move the bookcase.

3. Paint or lacquer the wood dowel. Use high-gloss paint or finish so the dowel can be wiped down easily. Let the dowel dry while you attach the braces that will support it. One brace goes on the wall opposite the bookcase and one on the back of the bookcase. Leave enough height to hang your longest garments when measuring the height of the braces for the dowel. Position the dowel 18 inches out from the back wall.

4. Install the dowel as the closet's hanging bar by slipping it into the braces. Attach the curtain rod hardware to the side wall and the back of the bookcase at the front edge of the closet. The curtain rod runs parallel to the dowel but high enough to hide it from view once the curtain is hung. Hang a single floor-length curtain or use two, split in the middle, for your closet "door."

5. Hang up your clothes behind the curtain. Tuck hat boxes and shoe keepers in under the hanging clothes to hold accessories, shoes and foldable clothes. Use the bookshelves for books or for attractive boxes that hold clothes you would normally put in dresser drawers.
