Organize A Baby'S Room

Organizing a nursery is a productive way to prepare for baby's arrival. It will make the adjustment of adding a new member of the family smoother and more manageable. The key to organizing is to make sure every item in a room has a place. Start by emptying the room if possible, and then vacuum and dust so you'll be working with a clean space. Get a few boxes and baskets to aid in the organization process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

First Things First

1. Safety and convenience are the top priorities when it comes to arranging baby furniture. Put the crib in an area away from windows, heaters and air vents. Place the dresser in an easily accessible location, keeping in mind that you will need space to open and close drawers on a regular basis. Move the changing table to a area that will allow room for a diaper pail on one side. Position the rocking chair on a rug next to a table with a lamp.

2. Organize baby's clothing by sizes. For example, place 0 to 3 months outfits in one pile, and 3 to 6 months outfits in another. Mark each storage box with a different clothing size. Place these boxes either under the crib or in the closet with the labels facing out for easy identification. Arrange baby's current clothes in the dresser, and hang any dresses or easily wrinkled outfits in the closet. Store socks, shoes and tights in the top drawer, pajamas in the next one, shirts in the next one and pants and heavier clothing items in the last.

3. Place the toy basket on the floor next to the crib or dresser if possible. Fill it with age-appropriate toys and books. Store any toys that baby has outgrown, or are beyond his level in a box, and label it appropriately.

4. Place a few books on the table next to the rocking chair. If baby is old enough, these may be books that you will read aloud to him. If she is still quite small, choose books that you can read and enjoy as you rock or feed her.

5. Place a CD player on top of the dresser along with some CDs that will help lull baby to sleep. These could feature classical music, lullabies or soothing nature sounds.

6. Stack small shelves or drawers underneath the changing table to store a basket of diapers and extra wipes. Keep a container of wipes in a basket on top of the table, along with a tube of diaper ointment. Place a diaper pail on the floor at the end of the table.

7. Secure a mobile to the crib, or attach appropriate toys to the side. A mirror tied to the bars can provide entertainment when baby first wakes, or when he is settling down for sleep.

8. Fit the crib mattress with a sheet and tie a crib bumper to the bars. Place extra sheets in a basket on the shelves or in the drawers of the changing table or in the closet.
