Declutter An Apartment

Declutter an Apartment

Cleaning out and organizing your apartment can make the space feel larger. For most, the idea of decluttering an apartment can seem overwhelming. By taking it one step at a time, it can be done and your apartment will be more livable after it has been completed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Start small with your decluttering efforts. In order to see quick progress that will provide motivation, begin with a small project such as your junk drawer in the kitchen. Empty the drawer. Throw away any unneeded items and organize the rest of the drawer. Consider installing a drawer organizer tray that can keep the drawer tidier in the future.

2. Declutter your apartment room by room. In each room, go through closets, drawers and other storage spaces. Make three piles: one for keeping, one for donation and one for trash. Once you have committed something to a pile, do not go back through and rescue the item. Deliver items to the trash can after each room is complete while putting all donation boxes in one spot for drop-off after your apartment is decluttered.

3. Use the donation and trash piles for items that are cluttering bookcases, countertops and tables. If the item hasn't been used in more than six months, donate or trash it. Display items that you would like to keep and store away seasonal items in closets in containers that are clearly marked with the contents.

4. Install storage devices in rooms to make organizing easier and more efficient. A closet organizer tailored to your needs can make your closet look neater and make it easier to find items. This can prevent you from duplicating items you own because you can't find them. Install a pantry system in a closet in or near your kitchen. Consider installing shelves or cabinets in bathrooms to store toiletry items. Remain vigilant about your decluttering when installing these items to prevent them from becoming storage for additional clutter.

5. Set up a system where junk generally piles up in your home. Everyone has a place in their home where bills, mail and other paperwork or items clutter up the space. Devise a folder or basket system to house these items. This makes it easier to keep the area clutter-free as well as making tasks, such as paying bills, more efficient when everything is in one area.
