Craft Room Design Ideas

Find space in your craft room for a sewing machine

Having a dedicated space for your crafting can make all the difference in the quality of your work. When designing a craft room, the main hurdle you will have to overcome is storage. Finding effective storage solutions that will keep your supplies organized and out of your immediate work area is no easy task, especially when you're working in limited space. But implementing clever and sometimes out-of-the-box storage solutions will make the task far easier. Does this Spark an idea?

Fabric Organization

If you mainly use your craft room for sewing, you know what a pain organizing your fabrics can be. If you have a closet or wardrobe in your craft room, consider turning it into a fabric organization system. Start by installing several closet rods (each rod should run you about $15 including hardware, based on 2009 prices). Don't use hangers that require you to clip the fabric; this will create an indenttion that is difficult to remove. Instead, opt for open-ended pant hangers which allow you to easily slide the fabric onto the hanger. Fill your closet rods with as many hanger/fabric combos as you need.

Maximize Desk Storage Space

Fight the temptation to purchase a desk that features drawers. It may sound crazy, but purchasing a desk with built-in storage constricts your desk's storage potential. Opt for a drawer-free desk with a high bottom and purchase rolling cabinets to place underneath your desk. You can fit up three rolling cabinets under a typical desk and up to five or six for an L-shaped desk. A typical rolling cabinet features three to five drawers, which means you can add up to 15 drawers of storage space on a typical desk or up to 30 drawers on an L-shaped desk.

Magnetic Storage

Why waste precious storage space when you can store your items on your walls? Store your small items on a magnetic board. Mount the magnetic board on your wall and fill magnetic storage containers with small items, such as buttons or beads. Then, simply stick the containers to the magnetic board. As an alternative to a magnetic board, y paint a portion of your wall with magnetic chalkboard paint.
