Organize A Closet On A Low Budget

You can get organized without spending a fortune.

You don't need to spend a lot of money or buy fancy gadgets to organize your closet. Simply eliminating clutter and focusing on the items that you love and actually wear will make a huge difference in the appearance of your closet. The items you need will be things you already have, or that can be purchased at the dollar or big box store, so the investment is minimal. Getting ready for work will be a breeze once your closet is organized and you will be shocked at how much space you really have. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove everything from the closet. Starting with an empty closet is the easiest way to be sure you evaluate every item, and put it away in the correct place. Pile the clothing on a bed or table, put the shoes in a single pile on the floor, and put accessories on a tabletop or in a laundry basket or box. Throw away any obvious trash like price tags, receipts and broken hangers.

2. Label one cardboard box "Give Away" and the other "Seasonal Storage." Begin with the clothing, and evaluate each piece to decide where it should go. The items should go back into the closet only if it fits you, looks good on you, is in good repair and is appropriate for the current season. Place any item that meets all of these requirements on a hanger in the closet.

Repeat this process with accessories, placing only the pieces that are in fashion, in good repair and right for the season in the closet.

3. Sort all remaining items into the cardboard boxes or place them in the trash. Items that are so worn or damaged that they won't be useful to anyone can go in the trash. Items that do not fit you, or you simply don't wear can go in the "Give Away" box. Items that you like and want to keep but are not for the current season can go in the "Seasonal Storage" box. Seasonal Storage can include items like bathing suits, sweaters, Christmas or holiday apparel and leather skirts.

4. Your closet should now contain fewer items, which will make it easier to organize. Group clothing on hangers by type and color, hanging all shirts in one section, and all pants and skirts in another. This will make it easier to spot a good combination at a glance.

Line shoes up in pairs on the floor for easy access, and place accessories in a pretty bowl or jewelry box, and place it on a shelf.

5. Place the "Seasonal Storage" box at the top or back of the closet or in the garage, and retrieve the items as needed for different times of the year. Place the "Give Away" box in your car, and donate it to a charitable organization. Put the trash bag out with the trash.
