Set Up A Water Storage System

A water storage system is invaluable in an emergency.

Water is the stuff that all life is made of. You need it for cooking, cleaning, drinking, irrigation and more. Our water supply comes through the pipes in our homes but it can be cut off in an emergency or disrupted in a disaster. When this happens, a water storage system can provide an alternative source of water for you and your family. Setting up such a system is easy and the peace of mind it will give you is invaluable. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

For All Types of Water Storage

1. Buy a water tank, cistern or barrel to fit your needs. Ensure that your tank has a secure cover to keep out contaminants. Store smaller amounts of water in 55-gallon drums, four and five gallon containers, or in drinking bottles.

2. Remove any plastic or other shipping materials and rinse the tank, drum or jar to remove all packing material and debris.

3. Pick a place to store your water. Store smaller containers in a protected place such as a cellar or storage room. Store a tank larger than 20 gallons on a concrete floor or other place that can handle the weight. For very large tanks, follow the rest of these directions.

Storing Large Amounts of Water

4. Store a rainwater tank close to the gutter drain on your roof.

5. Measure the tank and dig a two-foot deep hole about five inches larger than the size of your tank.

6. Use a shovel to mix two pounds or more of quick-drying concrete with the recommended amount of water and pour the mixture into the hole. Let the concrete dry for a day. Place the tank onto the cement base.

7. Slide the correct sized PVC pipe onto the drainage pipe of your roof gutter and position it over your tank, so the water from the gutter will drain into the tank. If you want to store potable water, do not use the PVC pipe and fill the tank with chlorinated tap water. Close the tank tightly with the lid or top that comes with it.

8. After the tank is filled, test the spigot on the bottom by turning it to the left and watching the water come out.
