Replace Folding Closet Doors

Tired of trying to clean each slat on those louvered closet doors and want a new fresh start? Perhaps a change is in order. You can replace those folding doors with brand new ones and all it takes is some time, patience and the ability to follow these steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Lift and remove the right door from the casing. Depending on the type of track that you have; you may need to unscrew the pivot plates before removing the door. The pivot plate is the part that hooks the door to the floor.

2. Lay each door down in an open area face up (the side that you would look at from the outside) in the exact position that it hung. Remove the screws from the hinges on one door only, so that you can separate them. Tape the screws to the door that the hinge is still attached to with masking tape, for easy retrieval.

3. Take measurements of the existing doors and the location of the hardware. Purchase the new doors to size and paint or varnish to desired finish.

4. Mark the location where the hardware is to be replaced. Remove a hinge from the old door and use it as a template. Outline it using the marks as a guide to the location. Chisel out the wood in the area so that you can set the hinge flush. Predill holes.

5. Attach the old hardware on the first door. Attach one side of the hinge to that door. Attach the hardware to the second door. Lift the first two doors up on edge with the hinge side up. Attach the other side of the hinge. Do the same with the other two doors.

6. Replace the doors in the track the same way they were removed.
