Tips For A Linen Closet

Your best sheets and favorite towels should always be close at hand in a well organized linen closet.

Like mudrooms and occasional tables, linen closets are a space in the home that tend to end up as storage for anything and everything. Incorporating a few simple tips into your linen closet will keep it organized and full of only your linens and a few related items. Does this Spark an idea?

Shelving and Organizational System

Install proper shelving or a plastic organizational system in your linen closet. Either of these systems should have sufficient space for your linen storage requirements. Add other organizational tools to your linen closet, like an iron rack on the back of the door for iron storage (always helpful when your linens need folding) and a plastic bin on the floor for your linen cleaning supplies like starch or stain remover.

Keep Clutter at Bay

Open up your linen closet to see if golf balls, baseball gloves belonging to the kids or even spare ties and dress shirts line the closet. If the answer if yes, you must declutter the linen closet. Decluttering your linen closet keeps it free for your towels, linens and other household textiles. Remove any items that do not classify as linens, and keep them out of that closet.

Sort and Fold

A superior organization system with shelves and organizers isn't enough to keep your linen closet in tip-top shape. Sort your linens and fold them before placing them in the closet. Always iron any wrinkle-prone sheets before placing them in the closet. Place sets of sheets together, and use a plastic bin for well-folded spare pillowcases and another bin for individual sheets that do not belong to a set.

Seasonal Linens

Store seasonal linens in a storage bin under your bed or in a basement during the off-season. When the first signs of spring or summer arrive, move those fleece sheets to their summer home. Keep soft cotton and light sheets in storage during the chilly winter months to ensure your linen closet holds just your essentials.
