Install Sliding Closet Doors On Tracks

Closet doors come in a multitude of designs and styles, but none are more functional than sliding doors. Sliding doors -- also called bypass doors or folding doors -- are one of the best options for maximizing space in tight areas where there is a limited amount of available floor space. Sliding doors are supported by upper and lower tracks, which make it possible for the doors to move horizontally back and forth without falling out. Installing the tracks and doors is relatively simple Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Install Sliding Closet Doors on Tracks

1. Measure each closet door that will be replaced. Take measurements horizontally across the top, center and bottom of the door first, and then vertically on both the left and right sides. If there is no door installed, simply measure the opening where the door will be (in the same manner). Use the smallest of the three horizontal measurements and the smaller of the two vertical measurements to determine the sizes for your new doors. Record these measurements and take them with you when you go shopping.

2. Do all prep work before installing the sliding closet doors. Paint the new doors, if desired, and attach all hardware. Remove the old doors, working in one room at a time.

3. Install the top/upper track, using your drill and making sure it completely fits the door opening. A shim (thin piece of wood) can be used to level the track, if necessary. Install the bottom/lower track, which will keep the door stable and prevent it from jumping out.

4. Mount the sliding door (beginning with the rear door) by first attaching it to the upper track, and then allowing it to fall onto the lower track. The tracks can then be covered up with decorative molding or trim.
