Configure A Pulley System For Ceiling Storage

If you live in a home with limited floor space, you are probably at a loss for storage room. However, if you have a high ceiling, then a solution is close at hand. Take advantage of that unused ceiling space with a storage system that is both efficient and innovative. Set up a ceiling pulley storage system and store your extra possessions overhead. All it takes is a little work and a few simple tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Weigh the storage containers that you intend to hang from the ceiling with this system. Make sure that the eye hooks you use are rated to handle the heaviest container.

2. Set the ladder underneath the ceiling and measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling. Add the height of the storage containers you have chosen for this system to the length of the pulley. Add the result to the length of the eye hook above the threads. Add this result to the height of the tallest person in your household. The ceiling height needs to be at least 1 foot more than the height you calculated.

3. Screw one of the eye hooks into a rafter in the ceiling. If the rafters are not visible, then you may need a stud finder to locate one. Screw the eye hook in until none of the threads are showing.

4. Hang the pulley block from the eye hook by the screw attachment on the pulley. Tie one end of the pulley's line to one of the storage containers.

5. Hoist the container as high as it can go. Walk the line over to the wall. Hold it as high overhead as you can comfortably reach. Mark the line and the wall at that point with the marker.

6. Screw a screw hook into the wall where you made the mark. Make sure that the hook is screwed into a wall stud, and is rated to carry the load it will be holding up. Tie a loop in the pulley rope where you marked it. Slip the rope over the hook. The hook will keep the load held up and out of the way until you need it. Just slip the loop off the hook and lower the load gently to the floor when you want to retrieve something from the container. Set up additional pulleys in the same manner, if desired.
