Diy Closet Desk Design

A closet and desk can be integrated into one unit.

Closet desks are an interesting and convenient use of space in homes where there is adequate storage space but not enough living space. By installing the desk inside the closet, there is the added benefit of being able to hide the potentially messy desk at a moment's notice by merely shutting the door. With the addition of a pair of 2-by-4 supports and a desktop, the closet desk will also be unencumbered by supports underneath, allowing for plenty of leg room and storage for the office chair when the closet door is shut. Closet desks are infinitely customizable, so you can change the basic plan easily to fit the particular closet in question. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the door if it opens into the closet, as some doors in larger closets do. Remove the hinges and flip them around exactly, using the same holes if possible to reinstall the hinges with the drill. Hold the door in place on the other side of the door jamb with the help of an assistant. Mark the new hinge holes on the door jamb with a pencil and predrill the holes. Attach the door to the new holes with wood screws.

2. Find the studs in the side and rear walls of the closet using the stud finder and mark both sides of each stud. Cut the 2-by-4 stud into three pieces depending on the width of each closet wall. Hold each piece up to its intended wall horizontally with the carpenter's level on top of it and predrill two holes through the 2-by-4 into each stud it covers, making sure each hole hits the studs and that the board stays level. Attach the boards to the wall studs with wood screws.

3. Measure the intended space for the desk board and transfer the measurements to the surface of the desk board with the pencil. Cut the board to fit the measurements so that the board will rest on top of the 2-by-4 supports without being too tight against the side walls. Position the board on top of the supports and predrill holes evenly around its edge into the 2-by-4s every 12 inches. Attach the desk board to the supports with wood screws.
