Build A Storage Bed Out Of Old Kitchen Cabinets

Storage is important to any homeowner. Adding storage to your home provides organization and piece of mind. A popular place to put items is under the bed, but this can result in clutter. Buying a bed set with storage under the bed at a furniture store is expensive. As an alternative, the steps below will help you to increase the storage in your home while saving money by building a storage bed out of old kitchen cabinets. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Acquire old kitchen cabinets from someone who is renovating her kitchen. Additionally, Habitat for Humanity Restores sell used building materials (see Resources), and purchasing the cabinets from them supports this charity.

2. Refurbish the cabinets and cabinet doors by sanding and with paint or stain to match your bedroom decor. Also consider changing the knobs for an updated look.

3. Turn larger cabinets on their side with the door opening from the bottom. Measure the length and width of your current bed. Cut a piece of plywood or MDF to match that measurement.

4. Line up the outer edge of the cabinets (the side with the doors on it) in a rectangle that matches the measurements for your bed (if your bed sets against a wall, you only need functional cabinets on the sides and base of the rectangle).

5. Attach the cabinets to each other with screws in the four corners where the cabinets touch, forming a solid rectangle. Screw plywood to the top of the rectangle for a strong platform. Place the box springs and the bed on the top of the plywood.

6. Optimize your new under the bed storage and use it for items such as clothes and books.
