Assemble Your Own Closets

Use shelf brackets and closet rods to assemble a versatile closet.

Assembling your own closets gives you the flexibility to customize your closet space to your needs. The cost is far lower than ordering a custom closet and if you have old closet parts, you can implement them in the design for further savings. With a simple technique, you can assemble your own closets without woodworking experience. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width, height and depth of your closet. Divide the height in three, then use the pencil to mark an "X" on the back wall where the two divisions should occur. This will cut your closet space into three segments.

2. Draw horizontal lines over the "X" marks on the back wall. You should end up with two lines. Use a single point laser to see the lines you should draw and a spirit level to confirm that the lines are straight or else your closet shelves will be crooked.

3. Install the 6 closet rod and shelf support brackets 1 inch below the horizontal lines, on the right, middle and left, using the hardware provided. Leave a 10-inch space between the brackets and the side walls.

4. Cut the shelves to the same width and depth dimensions of your closet. Cut the closet rod to the width dimension. If you don't have a saw, use the lumber cutting services of your local home-improvement store.

5. Place the shelves over the closet shelf brackets then rest the closet rods over the curved rod supports.
