Make A Closet Into A Student Desk Area

Sending your child to the closet to do her homework sounds a bit questionable, but an unused closet can provide a quiet study area that allows her to concentrate. It also solves the problem of placing a desk in an already crowded room. Whether you place the study area in a walk-in closet or a smaller storage area, infuse fun and functional elements to inspire learning. Consider your child's personality and preferences as you design the closet office. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clear out everything from the area for the closet makeover. Leave the shelves and the clothes bar in the closet for storage.

2. Take the closet's measurements. Measure the length, width and height of the area. Use these measurements to choose a desk and other furniture that fits inside.

3. Paint the inside of the closet to give it a fresh look. Choose the paint color wisely. Bright, vibrant colors such as reds are stimulating and energizing. Blues and greens are considered soothing colors. Yellow is thought to inspire creativity. Also, consider the child's favorite colors to make it a space he enjoys.

4. Place the desk inside the closet. A walk-in closet should fit the desk without problems, but if you're using a regular closet, test the doors to make sure they close properly. If not, consider replacing hard doors with a curtain that will allow for any hangover outside the door frame.

5. Mount a bulletin board to the wall above the desk. Consider adding a dry erase board for notes.

6. Place a lamp on the desk to provide appropriate lighting. Even if the closet has an overhead light, a lamp is needed to eliminate shadows.

7. Choose office organizers to hold necessary supplies such as pens, pencils, markers, scissors and tape. If space on the desktop is limited, mount the organizers to the wall or the inside the closet door.

8. Place books and other larger items on the closet shelf. Magazine holders or milk crates help keep items together on the shelves.
