Install A Bifold Door

If you are a homeowner, you do not always have to rely on a handyman to complete a simple home improvement project. There are some do-it-yourself jobs you can try on your own. Bifold door installation can be done if you have the appropriate tools and a little time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width and height of the door opening. Sometimes a door opening may not be square. Get a measurement from the top and bottom when measuring the width and a measurement from each side when measuring the height. Use the smallest measurement of the 2 for the width and for the height if they are different. The smaller measurements compensate for the difference if the door opening is not square.

2. Purchase bifold closet doors that have a combined width of 1 inch less than the width of the door opening and 1 to 2 inches shorter than the height of the doors.

3. Install the top metal track. Screw the track to the top of the door frame opening. One side of the track has an adjustable plate. Install the side of the track with the plate nearest to the sidewall. This is the hinged-side of the door.

4. Mount the L-shaped floor brackets where the sidewalls and floor meet. Rest the part of the brackets with the cut out on the floor of the door opening. Fasten the other side of the brackets to the sidewalls.

5. Insert dowels into the predrilled holes on each bifold closet door. Place the dowel with the screw assembly into the hole at the bottom of the door on the side nearest the sidewall. Put the dowel with the spring assembly into the hole at the top of the door on the side nearest the sidewall. Insert the dowel with no assembly into the hole at the top of the door furthest from the sidewall. Use a hammer to lightly tap the dowels into place.

6. Install closet doors. Insert the dowels on the top of the door into the track first. Make sure the dowel nearest the sidewall is placed into the plate assembly on the top track. Push the door upward and guide the bottom dowel into the L-bracket on the floor.

7. Adjust the height of the closet doors. Turn the screw of the bottom dowel to raise or lower the doors.

8. Install door hardware or handles. Find the center point of the door panel furthest from the sidewall. Mark the center with a pencil. Drill the hole for the knob. Screw the doorknob into the hole.

9. Test the doors by opening and closing. Adjust the doors if needed.
