Make An Inexpensive Yarn Storage Area

Yarn must be stored carefully to keep it organized.

Creative knitters and crocheters often acquire large quantities of yarn in various colors and textures. If not properly stored, yarn becomes tangled, disorganized, moth-ridden and dusty. Crafty yarn users can organize and store their yarn to keep it safe, clean and accessible. Everything will be easily visible so that you can find the particular skein you are looking for every time they go to start a new project. You can protect and store yarn all for very little money.

Instructions

1. Organize the balls of yarn you are not currently using by fiber content. Put each type of yarn in a transparent or translucent plastic box with an airtight lid. The boxes do not have to be pretty because the yarn inside them will dress them up, so you can buy cheap ones. Put the type of yarn you buy often in larger boxes and the ones you buy less frequently in smaller boxes. Write labels on decorative stationery, summarizing the type of yarn in each box and any particular care instructions you want to remember. Affix the labels to each box in a visible place using tape or, for a more decorative display, using ribbon or twine.

2. Stack the boxes on shelves in a closet or, if you want to show off your yarn collection, on shelves visible in your home. The different sizes of containers and colors of yarn add interest to this display. Choose lower shelves where the boxes will be easily accessible, rather than high shelves where you will be unable to shift boxes around to reach the one you want.

3. Place balls of yarn you are currently using in a hanging shoe-rack designed to fit over a closet door. Put them in decorative baskets lined with fabric to keep the yarn from catching on the basket weave or in an empty, inexpensive wine rack. Yarn you are planning to use in the near future does not need to be protected as carefully as yarn you want to store for later projects, so it can be exposed to the air.
