If you are building your own closet door, or just planning a rough opening for a closet, you need to know what a few good closet door sizes are. Standard Sizes
The standard width for bedroom closet doors is 30 inches. This applies to most bi-fold and single doors. This allows enough room to access the closet interior, while reducing the amount of swing-out space, which is the arc of space in front of the door required to open it fully.
Smaller Closets
A small closet, such as a pantry or linen closet, often has a smaller door. Some closet doors come in 24-inch sizes. This is true of many bi-fold doors that you find at home improvement centers. In some cases, the doors are installed in pairs, making a 48-inch-wide opening altogether.
Large Closets
Large closets -- for instance a master bedroom closet, hallway or foyer coat closet or even a big home-office closet -- may use a 34-inch door. This allows easier access to the closet. In the case of a walk-in closet, this also allows a person easy entry to the closet.
Odd Sizes
Odd sizes do exist for closet doors. A 28-inch closet door is often stocked in home improvement stores. This is ideal for one-bedroom apartments that do not have a great deal of space. Custom sizes often split the difference between this size and the standard 30-inch door. For instance, a 29-inch closet door is typically custom-made.
