Small Home Storage Ideas

Make wise use of storage in a small home.

Small homes are cute, quaint and cozy, but with that small size comes small storage. When your home's closets, spare rooms, attic and basement are full, however, that only means that you've used up all the traditional storage and need to find unconventional ways to increase your home's storage. First, decrease the amount of clutter by sorting carefully through your belongings to determine if anything can be thrown out or given away. Then, try some creative suggestions to maximize your storage space. Does this Spark an idea?

Think Vertical

Utilize wall space. Stacked vertically, your items will require fewer square feet than when they are spread out horizontally. Putting shelves on part of a wall or a whole wall can greatly increase a room's storage capacity. Use stackable shoe racks, baskets, stands, boxes and bins to make the most of vertical space and organize cluttered closets.

Double-Duty Furniture

Purchase furniture with built-in storage. Look for coffee tables, headboards, benches and other items that provide not only form but function with hidden storage compartments. Consider storage furniture items such as wardrobes, armoires and trunks, which are ideal for storing bulky items such as winter coats and clothes, blankets, quilts, board games, sports equipment and holiday decorations. Home furnishing stores offer many styles of economically priced storage solutions.

Unusual Spaces

Use dead space. Turn the top of tall furniture pieces such as china cabinets and grandfather clocks into shelves and store items on top of them. Create storage space by pulling headboards, dressers and sofas away from the walls a few inches. Place all beds in the house on risers, which will give you several additional inches underneath to store items.
