Ideas For A Small Nursery

One of the most joyous aspects of bringing a new baby into your home is decorating the nursery. A small room is perfect for a new baby, because babies do not need a lot of space as long as a few essential items are placed strategically. The most important item in the room should the crib, with other items positioned around it. Many methods of decorating will allow you to fit your baby comfortably into a small space. Does this Spark an idea?

Furniture

Purchase multipurpose items of furniture. Buy a crib that has a drawer attached so you will not waste valuable space underneath the bed. It is also a good idea to buy a bed that will grow with your baby. Furniture that folds up for storage works well for rooms that are cramped. Just make sure to find pieces that are portable but sturdy, and use items for their intended purpose. For example, you would not use a folding card table as a changing table.

Cut down on furniture, and use only items that you truly need. The crib is a necessity, as is a dresser. Purchase a dresser that has a changing table on top, or buy a portable changing table that can sit on top of your existing dresser. Rocking chairs are a must for the nursery so you will have a place to sit with your baby when he awakens for late-night feedings. Do not purchase that cute rocking horse or other large toy items until your child is much older and can actually play with them.

Organize Your Closet

Your closet can be a valuable resource in a small, cramped room. Closet organizers help maximize the space in your closet. Keep small items and toys in baskets and clear containers inside the closet, and stack them for better organization. Label everything for easy locating. Keeping a small room free of clutter will also make it appear larger. For your baby's clothes, place a second hanging rod about halfway down the closet wall below the rod at the top. This will allow you to hang up t-shirts and other items instead of folding them, which will free up drawer or shelf space.

Wall Space

Take advantage of your wall space. Many items in a nursery can be hung up, such as a diaper stacker or laundry hamper. Use an over-the-door pocket shoe rack to tuck away lotion, baby shampoo, wipes and even socks. The pockets do not have to be used only for shoe storage--any small items can be placed into them for easy reach. You can also use this rack to hold toys and other clutter.
