Standard Headboard Sizes

This is one type of decorative headboard.

Most beds have some sort of headboard, which supports the top end of the frame holding the mattress. Headboards may be simple (some bed frames don't even use them) or elaborate, depending on individual preference and design. Headboards are basically fitted to the width of the mattress but may be wider and may be of any height or style to fit the bedroom decor. There is no universal standard. Does this Spark an idea?

Start With Width

Headboard options start with the basic size of the bed, the width of the mattress, which can range from 38 to 72 inches. Twin mattresses, so-called because they generally come in pairs, are 38 inches wide. Full size is 54 inches wide but in between is a three-quarter at 48 inches. A queen mattress is 60 inches wide, a king 76 inches, and a "California king" is 72 inches. A headboard must be wide enough to fit these widths.

Heights Vary

Many commercial headboards are 49 inches high, but others are up to 55 inches tall. In general, the height and width will be somewhat proportional -- a 38-inch twin bed usually will not have a 55-inch tall headboard, but a king may look fine with that height. Material also will affect headboard size. A basic wood or metal headboard usually will be shorter than a decorative style incorporating other elements.

Some Height Suggestions

While there are no fixed standards for height, a headboard usually should be 23 to 29 inches from its top to the top of the mattress. Minimum headboard heights will vary with the type of mattress. Some designers use these minimum heights: 14 inches for twin, 16 inches for full size or queen, 18 inches for king. A bed with extra pillows will need more height.

Features Add Size

Adding features to a headboard will affect its size. A headboard with shelves on each side will be wider than the basic mattress; the difference will vary with the size of shelf. A padded headboard, with upholstery on the upright section, will usually be taller, so the upholstered area is above the height of the pillow on the bed. Headboards with lamps usually are taller, too.

Some Are Built In

Some designers create "built-in" headboards. These are custom-designed walls, with shelves, closet areas and other elements built in and incorporating a headboard as part of the wall. The bed frame may just slide into this wall space or may be attached, like in a free-standing headboard.
