Diy Basement Storage Closet

If your closets are crowded, create one in the basement.


As holiday decorations, clothes, sports gear, shoes, appliances, computer parts and other items accumulate in our homes, storage is one luxury we can't do without. Therefore, having plenty of closet space is a necessity. But some homes lack sufficient closet space. One practical solution is putting a closet in your basement. You can you build a closet even if you don't have the budget for a remodeling project. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Obtain furniture designed for storage. If you want a desk in the basement, consider a desk-hutch combination with cubbyholes, shelves, drawers and magazine racks. Pieces such as armoires, wardrobes or free-standing cabinets instantly add plenty of space in which to store items. Look for a model with drawers, several shelves, hanging bars and shoe racks to keep your items well organized. Ottomans, coffee tables and benches with storage also are available.


2. Create a closet. Block off an empty space or an unused corner from the rest of the basement behind a room divider such as a hanging curtain, bookcase or bookshelf, folding screen or moveable wall. In this nook, set up clothes racks, stackable shelf racks or shelf stands, all of which you can find in home improvement and home furnishing stores. This makeshift closet adds the storage you need, can be put up anywhere in the basement where you need it and can be taken down easily should you no longer need the closet.


3. Maximize the storage potential of furniture already in the basement. Store your items on top of large, tall furniture such as hutches, buffets, grandfather clocks and china cabinets. Pull couches and love seats away from the walls, and store items behind them. Raise couches and love seats up on risers to create storage underneath. With a only a few space-creating techniques, you can discover plenty of storage space.
