Make Home Theater Shelving In A Closet

Unclutter your home theater by using closet space.

Home theater electronic gear can often be bulky and unattractive in your living space. One solution is to hide the gear in a nearby closet, where you will need shelving to fullly utilize the space. The two main requirements for your gear shelving are that it be adjustable, and there be space between the back of the shelves and the back of the closet to allow room for cables. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure your components, so you know how much height you'll need for each shelf. Sketch out a design for your shelves. Make sure to add at least 2 to 3 inches of clearance for each of the components, to provide for proper ventilation and cooling.

2. Cut 1-by-2-inch boards to match the interior height of the closet. Place these vertically against the side walls of the closet, four inches from the closet's back wall. Drill holes through the boards and into the walls every 12 inches. Remove the boards and insert hollow wall anchors into the holes. Line the boards up with the anchors, insert screws, and tighten the screws to hold the boards flush to the walls.

3. Measure up the walls and make marks on both side walls at the planned height for each shelf. Cut 1-by-2-inch boards to match the distance from the front edge of the closet side walls to the vertical board you've just installed. Cut two boards for each shelf.

4. Place the boards horizontally against the side walls of the closet, at the heights you've chosen. Drill holes through the boards and into the walls every six inches. Remove the boards and insert hollow wall anchors into the holes. Line the boards up with the anchors, insert screws, and tighten the screws to hold the boards flush to the walls.

5. Cut plywood boards to match the size needed for each shelf. Place these boards onto the horizontal supports, with the back side of each board butted up to the vertical board in the back. Place your gear on the shelves after the shelves are in position.
