Ideas For Small Bedrooms

Decorating your bedroom with light hues is one trick that can make the space seem larger.

Small rooms can appear closed off, cluttered and uninviting. These are not words most people want associated with their bedroom, but if you're stuck with a tiny boudoir, knocking out a wall isn't your only option. Decorating pros have an arsenal of techniques you can use to effectively utilize the space you have available to make your room appear larger. Does this Spark an idea?

Lighting and Furniture

Ditch the floor lamps, and install track lighting to your ceiling. In addition to freeing up floor space, track lights can give a small room a more expansive feel. You can also furnish your bedroom with pieces that are to scale with the room. Overstuffed chairs and oversize desks can make your space seem crowed. Also place furniture at an angle whenever possible. When fixtures are placed this way, your eye has to travel further to see the whole piece, creating the illusion of a longer line. Plus bookshelves, couches and desks placed at an angle create a secret cubby hole against the wall you can use for storage.

Bedding

If your bed set is taking over the entire room, switch over to a Murphy bed. Murphy beds come out of the wall, so when you're not sleeping you can place the bed upright, giving you more space. You can even enhance the bed's underside with special storage lockers, photographs or wall decorations to give the room more panache. Another option is to loft your bed, which frees up a lot of room under your bedding you can use as a walk-in closet, a sitting area or a complete workstation with a desk and filing cabinets.

Walls

Stay away from dark hues when it comes to painting your walls. Gloomy colors can make a small room feel closed in while lighter colors can actually make a room appear larger, which doesn't mean you're limited to white and beiges. Soft shades of blue and green work well too. To enhance the effect paint any molding or trim in the room either the same color as the walls or a slightly lighter shade. Lightly colored objects appear further away than darkly colored items. As a result, lightened trims make the wall seem pushed back. Placing oversize mirrors on your walls can make a room seem larger as well. When your eye sees the reflection of the room, your mind registers the information as thought it is additional space.
