How Do Couples With Enormous Amounts Of Clothes And Shoes Organize In A House With No Closet Space

Do your research and find the best rates for storage units by comparison shopping.

It's your dream house but without the closet space you covet. Like many you know, you can't have it all; make the most of your available space by getting creative with your clothing storage solutions. Maximize your project by incorporating well-hidden storage throughout your home. Get rid of unwanted items as part of your closet makeover. Think quality over quantity when purchasing new shoes, jackets and suits. Does this Spark an idea?

Think Vertical

Create your own storage by thinking vertical. Invest in wardrobes for your bedroom, hallway and guest bedrooms. Fill these wardrobes with many of items you'd ordinarily store in a closet. Build shelves, complete with doors, in your downstairs hallway and other spaces; toss sweaters, jeans and other easily folded items in these carefully hidden spaces.

Go Deep

Buy plastic storage containers or wooden cases and place under the beds in your home. Fill these spaces with underwear, socks, pajamas and gym clothes. Find storage containers with wheels, if possible, as these make accessing your personal items a little bit easier.

Reduce

Reducing the amount of clothing and accessories you own is another way of de-cluttering in a home without appropriate closet space. Review all items in your wardrobe and dispose of any items that are beyond repair. Donate any lightly used or outgrown clothing to a charity in need. Have a garage sale of clothing, shoes and accessories that have high resale value, such as designer-brand purses and wallets.

Seasonal Storage

Buy plastic containers and store out-of-season clothing (winter boots, coats and ski clothing take up a lot of space) in your garage or common room unless it is the season of wear. Using storage services outside the home is another option. Keep the sports equipment out of your house and in a storage unit or a garage. Non-apparel items often take up space where clothing could be easily stored.
