Build A Freestanding Linen Cabinet

A linen cabinet makes resourceful use of space.

A linen cabinet organizes sheets, towels and blankets in one place. A freestanding cabinet can be easily be moved from one location to another to accommodate home design changes or moves. Keep heavier items stored at the bottom of the cabinet to lower its center of gravity. A linen cabinet with a tall, thin design can fit into unused areas more easily. Paint or stain can be applied following installation to help the linen cabinet fit in with the decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Stand up two 1/2-by-18-by-52-inch side boards with the help of an assistant. Make these boards parallel to each other with a foot and a half between them. Set a 1/2-by-12-by-18-inch top board on to their top surfaces and make any necessary adjustments so that the edges of the boards are all lined up straight.

2. Drill evenly spaced holes every six inches through the top board and into the end grain of the side boards. Set 1-inch wood screws into these newly made holes and tighten them so their heads are level with the wood surface. Rotate the structure 180 degrees and attach a similar 1/2-by-12-by-18-inch board to the other side to serve as the bottom board.

3. Lower the frame gently so it has a rectangular space facing upward. Set down a 1/2-by-18-by-53-inch board to cover this rectangular space and serve as the rear board. Line up the outside edges. Drill holes around the outside edge every 12 inches, through the rear board and into the edges of the other boards underneath. Put 1-inch screws inside the drilled holes and tighten them.

4. Invert the structure and position a 1/2-by-18-by-2-inch board and a 1/2-by-18-by-51-inch board over the open space so that the smaller board is on the bottom of the open space. Adjust the boards so they line up with the outer edge of the structure. Drill holes every six inches around the outside edge of the smaller board and into the end grain of the side boards. Put 1-inch wood screws in the holes and install them with the drill.

5. Position three side-mount hinges evenly spaced against the side of the larger board and the side of the cabinet. Mark the various screw attachment holes and drill these holes. Set half-inch screws in the holes and tighten them firmly with the drill.

6. Add the linen cabinet shelving by placing a 1/2-by-11-by-18-inch shelf board in the preferred location within the cabinet and making markings on each side board as to its position. Drill two holes on each side board, right at that level. Set pegs in the holes and reposition the shelf board on top of the pegs. Repeat as desired for additional shelving installation.
