Install Closet Wire Shelving Brackets

Wire shelving is lightweight but sturdy.

The very purpose of a closet is to provide storage, and yet closets are often a disorganized mess. Closet shelving systems are a great way to keep all of your clothing, linens and other items neat and organized. Wire-coated shelves are an inexpensive option that you can install on your own in very little time. The most important part of installing these shelves is mounting the brackets. A secure mounting location for the brackets is required to prevent the shelves from falling down later on. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all items from the closet to provide plenty of work space. Next, place a stepladder inside, if needed, so you can easily reach the upper portions of the closet walls.

2. Place a stud finder on the back wall of the closet and turn it on. Shift the stud finder to the side until you see a light, which signifies a wall stud. Mark the wall with a pencil at the location of the first stud, and then continue along the entire length of the back wall, locating all the additional studs.

3. Hold a metal mounting rail up to the wall, turning it horizontally. Push it up until it lies over the location of the wall studs and is less than 6 inches from the ceiling. Insert a pencil into each of the holes in the rail to mark the screw locations.

4. Align each of the screw holes with the studs behind the wall. Insert screws into the screw holes of the rail, using as screwdriver.

5. Locate two vertical hanging standards, which have numerous slots in them. Insert them into the upper railing by pushing the tops in the rail and then lowering the standards to the wall. Place the standards no more than 24 inches apart.

6. Place a level next to one standard so it is positioned vertically. Shift the standard to the left or right until the air bubble centers in the level. Hold the standard in place and insert a screw in the lowest screw hole, using a screwdriver. Repeat this step with the other standard.

7. Pick up a wire shelving bracket and turn it so the hooks face toward the standards. Decide on the height of the shelf, which is personal preference, and angle the bracket up while pushing it back into the slots in one standard. Next, lower the bracket to secure it in place. Install another bracket in the other standard, making sure it is in the corresponding hole so the shelf will be level.
