Closet Design Tips

Closet Design

add the most function--and style--to your closet is a "must do" for today's organized homes. There's a lot of options and a lot to think about when designing a closet. Storage solutions creatively make space where it was once thought there wasn't any, and a few closet design tips will make designing your closet a maximizing-space experience. Does this Spark an idea?

What Solutions Work for Your Closet?

It's not just about function; it's also about style. Wire systems, wood tones, or painted or laminate surfaces with splashes of color. Which ones work best for your closet space?

Closet systems make space out of unnoticed space. Shelves and drawers are strategically positioned in between clothes racks, underneath, above and on the sides. There are so many designs available, with features to make organizing your closet space both an easy and enjoyable experience. There are closet organization systems designed for all sized closets, from the small hallway closet to the large master suite, walk-in closet room.

Decide on the style, parts and accessories that will work well in your closet. Take measurements of your closet's width, length and height to your closet design store, to see what solutions are available for your closet.

The Accessories

Adding drawers is a change from the typical must have 5- or 6-drawer dresser. In fact, having drawers tucked away in the closet may seem awkward, yet it is a neat and efficient closet solution. Maybe there will be room for a lounge chair and a reading lamp in place of the dresser. Drawers work well to contain and manage smaller clothes items, and are a neat closet design solution.

Additional shelving is the way to go to add more storage space to your closet walls. Anything can be stored away on a shelf--clothes, bags, shoes, even extra blankets and linen. Add shelving to your closet for more storage efficiency. Also, make use of your extra wall or door space for belt and tie hooks. Some closet units have built-in racks that slide in and out for belts and ties.

Store your hamper in your closet if there's enough room. Of course, do not leave your dirty clothes in your closet for an extended period of time, but having it there is very convenient for changing clothes. Some closet storage solutions have built-in hampers or laundry baskets that pull out for easy use. Your hamper could even be a store purchased stand-alone unit, or a custom-built hamper on wheels.

Add a full mirror to one of your closet walls or to the back of your door. This way, you can easily check your clothes as you get dressed.

Add Light to Your Closet

An often overlooked feature when designing a closet is its lighting, especially if it is a small closet. Adding a lighting fixture to even the smallest of closets makes it so much easier to see it's contents, and their condition. This will also update the feel of your closet, adding a much-needed feature that will help you keep your closet space organized.
