Install New Closet Doors

Installing new closet doors can give your bedroom a new look without requiring costly renovations. Painted closet doors allow you to accent the room's color scheme. You may also need to replace the existing closet doors because of damage to the door or tracks. Follow this guide and you will have your new closet doors installed in minutes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure your old closet doors so you know what size replacement doors to buy. You can purchase premade doors that have already been finished and painted, or you can purchase unfinished doors and customize them to match your home's color scheme. If you are finishing your own closet doors, they should be completely dry before hanging them.

2. Lift one of the old doors up and pull the bottom edge toward you until it comes out of the track. Repeat for the other door. Some types of doors have a locking lever that must be released before the rollers can be pulled out of the track. Other doors have a cutout section in the track that allows the doors to be removed.

3. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and remove the track on top of the doorway. Measure the old track before discarding it so you know how long to cut the new track.

4. Cut the new track with a hacksaw so that it is the same length as the old track. Attach the track to the top of the doorway with wood screws. Completely tighten the screws so that the heads will be out of the way of the door's rollers. Do not over-tighten the screws because this can warp the track and prevent the rollers from sliding freely.

5. Attach the rollers to the inside edge of the top of the door, if necessary. Some closet doors come with the rollers pre-installed.

6. Lift up one of the doors and slide the rollers into the track. As in Step 2, you may have to release a locking lever or place the rollers in a certain cutout section of the track.
