Closet doors hide a multitude of sins behind them, from old winter coats to a child's disorganized video game collection. However, they don't have to look like they're hiding anything. If you're armed with a can of paint and an understanding of how you'd like to use the closet, you can transform your closet doors into part of the decor, as opposed to something you just want to hide. Mural
Murals bring permanent pieces of art to your living space and can change a closet door from an eye sore to a focal point in a room. Closet door murals work especially well if you apply them to the closets of your child's room, because they allow you to feature your child's favorite literary character or superhero in her room without resorting to posters.
Stencils
Stenciling provides you with a way to add some visual texture to your closet doors without having to paint a whole mural. Stencils come in a variety of different patterns and are simple to use. The beauty of stencils is that they allow you to visually echo a print that you have on your bed's comforter, on painted furniture or even on items like pottery. To begin a stenciling project for your closet, add a fresh coat of primer and paint to the doors to cover any marks that the doors have. If you're painting the stencils to match a pottery pattern, consider painting the doors the same base color as the pottery. Once the base coat of paint is dry, use architect's tape---which will stick, but not pull your new paint off the doors---to adhere the stencils to the doors. Paint in the stencils. Let the paint dry according to the instructions on the paint can. Remove the tape and the stencils once the paint dries.
Colors
Sometimes adding some visual excitement to a room is as simple as adding a different block of color to a large object---in this case the closet doors. For example, if you're looking to do something with the entryway closet door and the wall around the door is a deep gold color, lay down a coat of Chinese red plus a bit of paint texturing on the closet door. A look like this allows you to feature all of the colors you've chosen in your color schemes without overpowering the main color you've selected, which in this case is gold.
Chalkboard Paint
Sometimes getting a message to the family members who live in a busy household proves challenging. If your family falls into this category, consider painting a pantry door or a back mudroom door with chalkboard paint. Once the paint dries, you need only place a container of chalk on a shelf or counter nearby for people to write notes. This type of paint also works well on your child's closet doors. Young children like to leave marks everywhere. This gives them an excuse to do just that without ruining the walls around the closet.
