Install A Jeld Wen Closet Door

Put a door on your closet.

Jeld-Wen offers various types of standard interior doors that you can use for a closet door. This type of door will open outward unlike a bi-fold closet door that slides open along a track. First choose the type of door that you want to use for the closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the old door if you are replacing the door for the closet. Use a power drill to remove the screws that secure the hinges to the door frame, and then remove the door.

2. Measure the width and height of the closet opening with a tape measure.

3. Find the distance from the top of the existing door to the top of the hinge and the distance from the bottom of the existing door to the top of the existing hinge. Write these measurements down on a piece of paper.

4. Find a Jeld-Wen door that you want to use for your closet using the measurements from Step 2. If you cannot find an exact match, get a door that is slightly larger than your measurements.

5. Measure the width of the door to the measurements taken in Step 2 and subtract 3/16 of an inch from the top and right side measurements.

6. Make two marks at the top and side of the door with a pencil and connect the marks by using a straight edge. Cut along the marks to trim the door to the correct size by using a table saw.

7. Measure the side of the door to the location of the hinges using the measurements from Step 3. Place a hinge on one the side of the door, at the top, and draw a line on each side of the hinge with a pencil. Repeat this process for the hinge at the bottom of the door.

8. Use a chisel to make a mortise for the hinges on the marks you made in Step 7. The mortise is the depression in the door where the hinge is installed. Remove about 1/8 of an inch of wood from the door so the hinge will sit flush.

9. Place the hinges in the mortise and secure them with screws using the power drill.

10. Set the door into the door frame so the hinges align with the location of the hinges from the old door.

11. Secure the hinges to the door frame with screws using the power drill.
