Make A Man'S Closet

A well-planned man's closet has everything he needs within easy reach.

A man's closet should provide all of the essential tools, spaces and functions he needs to store and retrieve his garments in their best possible condition both quickly and easily. To create a man's closet, examine the man's lifestyle to understand which types of clothing he uses frequently and how many items he needs to store. A well-planned man's closet will also include a steaming station, full sized mirror, good lighting and a place to sit down. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the size of the existing closet. Transfer the measurements to 1/4-inch graph paper. Note the location of the door, any windows or other features that impact the design. Place tracing paper over the graph paper and tape the tracing paper down.

2. Remove the man's clothing from the closet and sort the clothing into groups. Prioritize the groups by level of importance, placing work clothing on top. Discard or donate any damaged clothing or items he no longer wears. Determine which items should hang, and which should be folded or stored in a drawer. Obtain an accurate count of his shoes, belts, ties, hats and bags. Remove all non-clothing items from the closet. Create a list of his clothing storage needs.

3. Use a closet organizing brochure or online organizing tool to determine the measurements of a suitable shelving system. Fold sweaters, t-shirts and other folding items and measure them to understand how many will fit in a drawer or cubby. Use the organizer brochure or tool to determine how many items can be hung per foot on closet rod. Plot out the closet organization on your tracing paper. Make several designs. Store out-of-season items on upper shelves. Select the design that works best for your man.

4. Remove all remaining items from the closet including existing shelves and closet rods. Remove the baseboard. Paint the walls and ceiling after sealing with a primer that covers odor-producing walls (often older closets harbor a musty or moth smell). Cover one or more walls with cedar to prevent moth and bug infiltration. Install the baseboards and paint them and the door a crisp white.

5. Install a closet organizing system based on the design you selected. Attach a full-length mirror to the inside of the door. Install a new light fixture that shines good light on the closet amenities and clothing. Purchase wood clothes hangers and garment bags for storing out-of-season clothing. Put the clothing away. If the closet is large enough, include a chair or stool along with a suit steaming station.
