Design My Custom Kitchen

Design a kitchen that is customized to your needs.

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the home. Not only is it the place where meals are prepared, but it's the space where family and friends gather to eat and socialize. Since it's such an important space, it should contain elements that suit your personal style and accommodate your specific needs. Consider how you use the space and the look you want to achieve and design a customized kitchen that is both functional and enjoyable to be in. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Plan the layout of your kitchen. On a piece of paper, create a rough floor plan for your new kitchen. Determine where you would like to locate appliances, cabinetry, islands, eating areas and other elements that you may want incorporate in your custom kitchen. Plan to have the appliances placed within easy reach of one another to make the kitchen a functional space. You may want to add a new entryway and windows to brighten up the room. If you don't have a set budget, consider knocking down existing walls to allow for a smooth flowing kitchen, as well as to accommodate all of the elements you desire.

2. Research kitchen appliances, accessories and other kitchen elements. Look through magazines and books to get an idea of the different styles and looks that are available. Take into consideration the opinion of the members of your household to design a kitchen that all will enjoy.

3. Decide what type of elements you want to incorporate in your kitchen. If a lot of baking occurs in your kitchen, you may want to incorporate double wall ovens. A pot filler installed above a stove may be useful to you and your family if you cook a lot of pasta. If you enjoy grilling, install a range that features a grill.

4. Pick finishes and colors. Cabinetry is made from several different materials, including cherry, oak, maple and composite materials. Tiles for backsplashes, floors and countertops can be made from natural, recycled and man-made materials, and the color options are virtually endless. Decide if you want to use white, black or stainless steel appliances, or you can even have appliances customized to match your cabinetry.

5. Visit home improvement stores and kitchen showrooms. Once you've done research and decided on a style and different elements you want to incorporate into your kitchen, see what is available to you and what materials look like in real life. Take pictures of items that strike your fancy to make comparisons -- this will help you finalize decisions.
