Clever Storage Ideas for Your Home Office
With today's sophisticated technology growing smaller and more efficient, even the most demanding worker can have an office in a closet. Simple products available at hardware stores and lumberyards make the project easy and fun to do in just a weekend, resulting in a space that is as unique as your needs and cost-effective as well. Building the Desk
Empty everything out of a large closet with doors on it. Choose a wallpaper and two coordinating paint colors. Wallpaper the inside of the closet. Purchase two standard sized filing cabinets, around 27 inches high and 18 inches deep. Buy two rolling stands so the filing cabinets will be easy to move, and attach them to the filing cabinets with metal screws. Spray paint the cabinets in one of the two coordinating paint colors. Buy a piece of 3/4-inch-thick laminated board and place it across the cabinets to form the desk.
Storage in the Doors
Paint the inside of the doors in a color that coordinates with the wallpaper. Use screws to attach sheets of pegboard and cork on the doors. Glue wood trim around the sheets to give them a finished look. Hang hooks on the pegboard, to hold scissors, tape and small bins for pens and pencils. Put tacks into the pegboard. Hang clipboards on the pegboard that can hold papers at easy reach.
Other Storage Solutions
Use leftover wallpaper to cover lidded boxes for storage. Hang wire baskets from the closet rod to hold files and paperwork. Spray paint the lids of clean jars, and then place them on the desktop for additional storage. Screw in an eyelet hook at each end of the closet, about 3 feet above the desk. String twine or wire between the hooks. Hang clips from the wire and hang artwork, papers or photographs from the wire. If possible, hang a small light from the ceiling of the closet to give additional light without taking up valuable desk space.
