Measure & Install Bifold Closet Doors

Install bifold doors to create a little space where you need it.

For people who live in small spaces, closet space is crucial. If your closets have traditional doors that open inward, you may be losing vital storage areas to provide them clearance. Likewise, if the doors open outward, you must keep furniture out of the way, effectively losing precious floor space in the room where the closet is located. The answer to this dilemma is a set of bi-fold closet doors. They open outward, but quite shallowly. Install bi-fold doors on your closet and you can use every inch of your space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure from the inside of the left side of the door frame to the inside of the right side of the door frame. Place the top of the tape measure flush against the top of the doorway and measure straight to the floor. Take these measurements with you to purchase the doors.

2. Purchase bi-fold doors that are the correct size for your opening. If your measurements fall between sizes, purchase the larger size and trim a bit evenly from each side so that they fit. Use a planer to shave the necessary height or width.

3. Locate the center of the upper door jamb and mark it with a pencil. Place the flat side of the included bi-fold door track against the jamb and use the mark to center it. Sink screws through the provided holes and into the jamb to hold the track in place.

4. Butt a plumb bob up against the left top corner of the opening and drop it straight down; mark where it hits. Do the same for the right corner. Attach the two floor brackets with screws so that they align with these marks.

5. Carefully lift one bi-fold door and place it in the correct side of the door frame at a slight angle so that the top pins slide into the upper track. Pull the door straight up and work the bottom pins into the lower track. Repeat this process for the second door on the other side.

6. Test the doors to see if they are too easy or too difficult to open. Tighten the top pivots with a screwdriver if they open too easily, and loosen the pivots if the doors are too hard to open. Find the center of each door, drill a pilot hole, and screw on the doorknobs.
