Make The Most Of Your Closet On A Budget

It's difficult to find clothing and other items in a messy closet.

A functional closet can be yours without the need to spend a fortune or invest in custom closets. The key to making the most out of your closet is arranging items so that you can easily reach the things you use most often. You also want to take anything you don't use or wear out of the closet. Invest in inexpensive storage items, such as shoe holders and hangers, to keep everything in order. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove clothing, shoes and other items from your closet. You want the closet to be empty, because you are starting over from scratch.

2. Sort the items from your closet into categories. Any clothing or shoes that have seen better days go into a discard pile. Any clothing that needs to be cleaned or mended goes into a cleaners/tailor's pile. Create a donate pile for anything you haven't worn in months but is still in good condition. Create another pile for items that migrated to your closet but do not belong there. Finally, make a pile of the items that will return to your closet.

3. Sort the clothing and items that go back into the closet by style, type and, last, color. Put the items you use daily or weekly, such as your work blouses, pants and jeans, onto hangers, and hang them in the area of your closet that is easiest to see and reach. Put other items, such as out-of-season clothing and photo albums, in storage bins, and place them in the back of the closet or on a top shelf.

4. Create a second section of clothing for dressy garments that you don't wear as often, such as your formal suits or gowns. Hang these next to your everyday clothing.

5. Sort shoes into a hanging organizer, cubby box or separate shoe boxes. If you are using shoe boxes, clearly label the boxes so that you know which shoes are in which box. Put the shoes you wear regularly in the top compartments of the cubby or hanging organizer. If you are using shoe boxes, put the boxes containing everyday shoes on the top of the pile.

6. Use shelf dividers to organize items on the closet shelf. If you have stacks of folded T-shirts, jeans and sweaters, place a divider between each stack to keep the piles neat. Use the dividers to keep purses upright and easily accessible.
