Knowing turn a shoji screen into a closet door gives you the ability to add functionality and style to your bedroom or other rooms in your house. It doesn't require much time or work, making it a project achievable by even the beginner do-it-yourself hobbyist. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the height and width of your open closet. If it has a door on it, remove it, using a hand drill. Obtain a shoji screen that best corresponds with your closet's size.
2. Place the screen in front of your open closet. Unfold its panels so that it looks like a closed door across your closet. Align one free edge of the screen with one side of your closet frame. This is where you will attach the screen, so choose the side according to what feels comfortable to you.
3. Place a 1-inch hinge, opened, on the side of the screen that is aligned with the closet frame, close to the top. If you are working with a 6-foot screen, place the hinge about 12 inches from the top. Line up the hinge so that one side of it is on the shoji frame, and the other side is on the closet frame.
4. Place a screw in the top hole on the side of the hinge that lays across the closet frame. Secure it in place with the hand drill. Repeat this step with the bottom hole of the hinge over the closet frame.
5. Hold the screen firmly in place, with the hinge on its frame. Drill a screw into each hole of the hinge on the frame.
6. Attach a hinge in the same manner at the midway point of your screen. If your screen is 6 feet tall, the hinge needs to be placed 2 feet below the top hinge.
7. Attach the final hinge at the bottom edge of the screen, connecting it to the closet completely. Again, if you're working with a 6-foot screen, the hinge would be about 12 inches from the bottom. This allows you to open and close the screen.
