Organize your shoes in a shoe file.
There is nothing more satisfying than taking a messy closet and organizing it so everything has its own designated place. Clothing can be hung or folded and stored on shelves or in drawers, but where do you put all those shoes? There are several options for storing shoes vertically to clear the mess from the closet floor and organize them in an easily accessible way. A clear plastic hanging pocket shoe holder -- also known as a shoe file -- is one solution that is easy to make yourself.
Instructions
1. Cut a 14-inch-by-63-inch piece of canvas or other heavy-duty fabric. Finish off the edges by folding over 1/4 inch twice and sewing with a zig zag stitch.
2. Cut two 13-inch-by-110-inch pieces of clear plastic (vinyl).
3. Fold and sew bias tape over the entire edge of the two pieces of vinyl to give them a sturdy finish.
4. Place the top edges of the two pieces of vinyl two inches below the top edge of the canvas fabric. You will need the two inches of canvas to form a tab later. Place one piece of vinyl on top of the canvas and the other underneath. Sew through all three layers.
5. Measure 11 inches from the top of each piece of vinyl and sew them to the canvas 6 inches below the top seam. This makes a clear pocket on each side of the canvas. Repeat this to the bottom of the canvas until you have made 10 clear plastic shoe pockets on each side of the canvas. Each pocket will fit one pair of shoes.
6. Cut a small vertical slit in the center of the remaining two inches of fabric at the top of the canvas.
7. Insert the hook part of a sturdy metal hanger through the slit in the canvas of the shoe holder. Remove any clips if you are repurposing a skirt hanger for this step.
8. Fold the top edge of the canvas over the hanger arms and sew straight across the width of the canvas fabric. You now have a streamlined plastic shoe holder that can hang in your closet or on a hook on a door.
