Ideas For A Large Bedroom With No Closet

When you don't have a closet, floating shelves can store clothing.

In a bedroom with no closet, storage can be a challenge for both clothing and other belongings. With the extra space in a large room, you can build in storage options without modifying the structure of the bedroom. As you plan the room design, consider how visible you want your makeshift closet to be and the items you need to store. Does this Spark an idea?

Hidden Storage

Because closets are often used for more than clothing storage, have hidden storage that will keep your belongings off the floor without cluttering up the room. In a large bedroom, you have room to create hidden storage that will be functional as well as attractive. Section off one end of the room, leaving about 3 or 4 feet from the wall, depending on your things and the size of the room. In the space, put standing bookshelves and pile storage boxes. To conceal the storage area, hang fabric panels from the ceiling to the floor. The fabric will add to the room design and act as a temporary wall.

Storage Wall

To add depth and detail to a large room, turn one wall into a visible storage section. Start with two tall, narrow bookcases, and put a clothing rod between them at the top and bottom to create two levels of hanging clothes storage. If you don't have a dresser, turn the tall shelves into storage by putting colored bins in the shelves to store small items like socks and underwear. Install floating shelves to hold folded clothing and boxes.

Freestanding Closets

When you have a large room, you have the space to use freestanding closets. Depending on your budget, you can invest in expensive wardrobes or stick with cheaper versions that you can find at stores like Walmart and Ikea. Place a freestanding closet against the wall, or use them as dividers to create a separate space for reading or an office to make the most efficient use of your large bedroom. Because many freestanding closet options can be taken apart and reconstructed, they are useful even if you move frequently.

Wall Shelf and Bar

If you have a dresser but need space for storing folded and hanging items, use a combination of a wall shelf and a clothing bar. Choose one end of your bedroom, and run a closet clothing bar across the length, adding support brackets every 4 or 5 feet. Above the bar, use a full-length floating shelf that can be used for sweaters and other items. Use the area underneath your hanging clothing to store shoes or packing boxes.
