The layout of your closet depends on what you plan to store. To decide the placement and size of your shelves, drawers, cubbies and rods, look at the different types of clothing you have so you know how much space you'll need for each.
Materials and Accessories
When designing your closet, decide if you want to redo the whole closet or keep it as it is. For example, you may choose to line the inside of the closet with wood or change the doors. You'll also should consider things that you'll need to add, such as clothing rods, shelves and cabinets.

Shelves and Drawers

The placement of your items also is important in so that your closet is always organized. Folded clothes that you use often such as t-shirts and sweaters should be stored at a height between your shoulders and your knees for easy accessibility. If you place these items higher or lower, you'll find that it harder to put things away. You may also want to leave about 15 percent of free space for clothes you purchase in the future.
Clothing Rods
When you hang clothes, consider that some will be longer, such as dresses and pants, and some will be shorter, such as blouses and skirts. The recommended closet rod height is 65 inches from the floor so if you have a nine foot ceiling, you'll have about 43 inches of free space above the rod where to store bulky and seasonal items such as comforters and winter sweaters. Consider adding an extra shelf above the closet rods to take advantage of the space close to the ceiling. Other ways to hang rods include double hanging rods where the upper closet rod height is at 80 ¼ inches and the lower rod is height is at 39 1/4" to accommodate shirts, blazers, blouses, and folded pants. Medium hanging rods are installed at a height of 45 1/4 inches for space for shelves above the rod often to store medium length dresses and pants.
