Make A Fabric Handbag Hanger

Keep your handbags organized with a hanging fabric handbag organizer. Because hanging handbags by their straps on hooks can cause undue stress on your bags, this fabric handbag organizer has three rows of pockets where handbags can comfortably rest. It is also flat so that it can be hung either against a wall or on the back of a door, minimizing the space that your stored handbags take up. Use any type of fabric and pattern you desire to create your own, unique organizer. Feel free to adjust the size to accommodate less or more handbags.

Instructions

1. Purchase two different but complementary fabrics, one for the organizer backing and one for the pockets. You will need 1-1/2 yards for the backing and 2-1/2 yards for the pockets. This will make a 24-inch-by-40-inch handbag organizer.

2. Cut the backing fabric to be 24 inches wide by 40 inches long.

3. Sew a 1/2-inch hem around the edge of the backing fabric.

4. Cut the fabric for the three rows of pockets. The bottom row will be for larger handbags. Cut the bottom row of fabric at 20 inches wide by 20 inches long. The center row will be for medium-sized handbags. Cut the center row at 20 inches wide by 18 inches long. The top row will be for small handbags. Cut the top row at 20 inches wide by 16 inches long.

5. Sew 1/2-inch hems around all edges.

6. Fold each of the three pieces of fabric cut for the pockets in half lengthwise and iron the fold to create a sharp crease.

7. Center the three folded pieces of fabric along the backing fabric and pin them in place. Sew the bottom and side edges of the folded pieces of fabric, connecting them to the backing fabric. The opening at the top edge will be where the handbags are inserted. Sew just the back flap at the top edge to the backing fabric.

8. Create individual pockets in the rows. Sew vertical seams spaced evenly along each row, connecting the folded fabric to the backing. The space between each seam will be its own compartment. Split the bottom and center rows into three pockets each and the top row into four pockets.

9. Attach two curtain grommets at the top corners of the backing for hanging the organizer. Cut a hole the size of the grommet hole, positioning the two grommet halves on either side of the hole and use a mallet to tap and lock the two halves together.

10. Hang the fabric from peel-and-stick hooks, hooks that are screwed to the wall or from hooks that clasp over the top edge of a door.
