Usual Sizes Of Walkin Closets

Many times a walk-in closet can serve as an office.

The sizes of walk-in closets varies based on a variety of factors. By considering the different variables in closet design, you will come up with a measurement that fits your home and lifestyle. The important thing to consider is your own personal needs, since the closet is storing your stuff and will be a big part of your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Sizing Requirements

Not all walk-in closets need to be enormous. The minimum space requirements are fairly small, in fact. As long as there is space to walk through the closet and enough room to store your clothes, it will serve the purpose it is intended to serve. Make sure a minimum of 30 inches is available to walk into the closet. Expand this to three feet to make the walking area more comfortable. Also allow for a 24-inch space to hang clothing, and 28 inches for hanging larger jackets and overcoats, if they are stored in the closet.

Minimum Sizes

Walk-in closets may be as small as five feet square. This size allows for three feet of walking space and two feet of clothes hanging space along one wall. This minimum size is perfect for a single bedroom apartment, or a small master bedroom in a small home. It may not be large enough for two people sharing the same closet. The minimum size in this case is at least six feet square. This assumes clothes hanging rods are double stacked, and a minimal amount of boxes and non-clothes items are stored inside.

Walk-Ins for Two

While a walk-in for two people must be at least six feet square, making it large is advisable. Two people generate a lot more stuff and clothing. Determine the amount of clothing each person has first. A traditional closet rod hangs about 12 garments per foot of closet rod space. For suits and jackets, count on six garments per foot of space. After determining how many garments each has to hang, begin to calculate how much length you need to space the closet rods. Assume you will double stack the rods to save space. The next step is to add shelving for sweaters, shoes and gear. Typically, shelving spaces are two feet wide and spaced about 15 inches apart along the wall.

Home Size

Your home size plays a big role in determining the size of any walk-in closet. Bigger homes with more rooms allow for more closet space. If you need a lot of space, walk-in closets that are 6 feet by 10 feet, or 8 feet by 8 feet suffice for most. In extreme cases where two people have lots of clothing, a 12-by-10 foot , or even a 12-by-15 foot walk in closet is sufficient. Always consider the effects of enlarging the walk-in; it will shrink the size of the main bedroom. Always balance the need for storage with the need for living space, plus your bed, nightstand and other furniture in the bedroom.
