Hang Up Rubbermaid Upright Shelving

Hang Up Rubbermaid Upright Shelving

Building a series of shelves from scratch can be backbreaking and time consuming. If you want to save yourself the time and effort, consider a Rubbermaid upright shelving solution. Rubbermaid upright shelves use a secure rail to hang support beams. These beams can be adjusted to whatever spacing you need and the shelves themselves snap right in. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Find the studs in the section of wall where you want to install the Rubbermaid upright shelving. Place a mark on the middle of each stud at least 4 feet off the floor. Each mark should be approximately the same height. The number of studs you need to mark will depend on the distance between your studs and the length of shelving you are installing.

2. Hold up the rail so that it is aligned over the marks you just made. The rail looks like a "W" from the side, so have the bottom of the "W" flat against the wall. Position the rail so that the last holes in the rail on each end are over the center of a stud. If this is not possible, then have at least one end over the studs.

3. Place the level on top of the rail and adjust the rail angle until it is level. Have someone hold the rail steady while you mark the studs.

4. Place a pencil mark through the top and bottom holes in the rail whenever the holes in the rail are over a stud. Place a mark in just the top hole whenever the holes in the rail are not over a stud. Remove the rail from the wall.

5. Drill pilot holes using the 1/8-inch drill bit wherever you have marks on the studs. Drill pilot holes through the drywall, using the 3/8-inch bit, wherever you have marks that are not on the studs.

6. Place anchors into each 3/8-inch hole. Squeeze the arms of the anchor together and then press it into the hole, then hammer the anchors flush with the wall. If you do not hear the anchor engage, insert the anchor key into the anchor, pressing in until you hear a snap.

7. Place the rail back on the wall so that the holes in the rail match up with the holes and anchors in the wall. Screw the rail into place using the screws provided with the Rubbermaid set. Place the rail cover over the rail at an angle, then push down on the bottom of the cover until it snaps into place.

8. Place the plastic gripper pieces over one end of the upright posts and secure the gripper in place using the allen key provided with the set.

9. Place the gripper end of the post over the rail at a 45-degree angle, then push down on the post until the gripper snaps into place. Position several posts along the rail; keep them 16 inches apart and place as many as you can fit. These upright posts should be about 8 inches from the end of the top rail.

10. Secure the posts in place by drilling a screw into the bottom hole on the upright. Use an anchor if the upright isn't over a stud.

11. Place the shelf brackets onto the uprights. Slide them in at a slight angle until the notch on the end is completely in the slot, then push down to lock it into place. Place a bracket at the exact same height on all the other uprights.

12. Slide the shelf into place on the brackets. The back wire on the shelf will fit into a slot on the back of the brackets. Once the wire is in the slot, slide the plastic tab, located on the side of the bracket, back until it locks the wire into place.
