Donate Used Books In Nyc

Bring those books you no longer need to the public library.


New York City makes the practice of donating books relatively straightforward with its three library systems, the Brooklyn Public Library, the Queens Library and the New York Public library, which operates branches in Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx. Donated books must be in good condition and dropped off at any library in person. Donating used books is a good way to support the public libraries in New York City, which often struggle with securing funding through municipal budgets.


Instructions


1. Pack up the books you no longer want. Do not put too many in one box or bag as it may be difficult to carry. Inspect each book's individual condition. Books must be in good condition, free of stains and not be ripped, in order for most libraries to accept them.


2. Donate books to the New York Public Library at any time at their mid-Manhattan branch located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Residents wishing to donate books to other branches within the New York Public Library system must contact one of its 87 locations directly. You can find specific location information on the New York Public Library's website.


3. Visit your local Brooklyn Public Library if you are a resident of Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Public Library asks that guests limit donations to three reasonably-sized boxes of books each week. Books can be donated to any branch. Call 311 or visit the Brooklyn Public Library website for locations.


4. Contact your local Queens Library and ask for the library manager before dropping off any books for donation. Queens residents wishing to donate books to their local branch must arrange a time beforehand, especially if the donation is a large one. Any books that they cannot use will be sold with the proceeds benefiting the Queens Public Library.
