Size Closet Doors

Sizing a closet or interior door is a simple procedure that requires four basic measurements, all of which can be taken with a measuring tape or measuring stick. When sizing a closet door, check that the door opening is not larger at one end than at the other. While an incongruent closet door frame does not mean you have to abandon your plans for a new closet door, it does mean you must take a few extra steps to bring the closet door toward being a true square. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width of the doorway starting from the top and measuring left to right or right to left. Write down each result.

2. Find the width of the doorway starting from the bottom and measuring left to right. Again, you can also move right to left. Record your measurements.

3. Measure the height of the doorway starting at the left side and measuring top to bottom or bottom to top. Write down the figures.

4. Find the height of the doorway starting at the right side and measuring top to bottom. You can also move bottom to top. Record your measurements.

5. Choose a standard or custom-fit closet door that works with your measurements. A door frame with a width of 16 inches (at the top and bottom of the door frame) and a height of 80 inches (at the left and right sides of the door) is a standard-sized door frame. Custom-sized closet doors can be ordered at a home furniture store or online retailer.
