Space Saving Closet Ideas

Bring out the step stool to neatly place items on a high closet shelf.

Whether you have a tiny apartment closet or a luxurious walk-in closet, you will get the most use out of your closet space with careful planning. Space-saving closet ideas will not only make your closet look better, they will help you and your family get ready more quickly, making mornings less stressful. Does this Spark an idea?

Maximize Hanging Space

Double your storage capacity for shirts and jackets with a second closet rod beneath the existing one. If your ceiling is high enough, install a wire shelf with a closet rod attached beneath it below your top rod. Look for tiered hangers that link multiple hangers together so that clothes hang closer together and use more vertical space than horizontal space.

Use the Door

Don't let the space on the inside of the closet door go to waste. Hang an over-the-door shoe organizer to free up space on shelves or the floor, or keep your earrings and bracelets sorted and easily accessible with an over-the-door jewelry organizer. Don't disregard old-fashioned organizational accessories; screw coat and hat hooks into the door to hold purses, belts and scarves.

Use Vertical Space Wisely

Closet shelves that are too high for easy access tend to become cluttered as homeowners toss and shove rarely used (and thus rarely seen) items on them. Avoid a hodgepodge of junk and essentials that takes up more space than it should by bringing out the stepladder. Categorize items into stackable plastic boxes, using large labels so you can easily identify the contents of each box from the ground. When you come across a seasonal item that you'd like to store on an out-of-reach closet shelf, grab the stepladder and make a proper home for it among the rest of your tidy belongings.

Put Suitcases to Work

Unless you travel frequently, you can make your suitcases do double duty. Store bulky items, such as blankets, heavy winter coats and extra sheet sets, in larger suitcases and keep smaller items, like pantyhose and socks, in smaller carry-on bags. Don't throw away those old-fashioned, hard-sided suitcases when you get new luggage. Instead, use them for stackable storage on your top closet shelves.

Customized Shelving

Installing too many closet shelves or making them too shallow or deep makes it difficult to stack items and can lengthen the search for needed items. Install shelves sized for the items you need to store, such as shoeboxes or cloth-lined baskets.
