Design Closet Shelves

Shelves help you organize your closets.


Well-organized closets make it easy to find and use your belongings. Preparing a custom design will help meet your storage needs. Whether it is a master bedroom closet or a simple office closet, designing closet shelving helps eliminate the question of where to store things. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Measure the closet hoirzontally and vertically.


2. Make a sketch of the closet to scale on graph paper. Include any hanging bars or shelves the closest already has. Take note of any lighting or electrical features.


3. Make a list of items that will be stored in this closet. Include shoes, clothes, storage boxes, jewelry drawers and other apparel and accessories for bedroom closets. You may want to include linen storage in this closet space, too. For offices, pantries and craft closets, make a list of items. Measure any large items that need a specific amount of storage space.


4. Fill in the shelving needs for the closet, beginning at one corner of your sketch and working your way around the closet clockwise. Folded clothing and shoes require a shelf at least 12 inches deep.


5. Determine the type of shelving material you want to use. Most closet systems use types wire shelving, laminated MDF boards or solid wood. Weigh the costs and benefits of each before making a decision.


6. Purchase materials and install the shelves yourself. Or hire a contractor to build the closet according to your sketched design.
